You Know You Are Old When . . . You Have Become An Efficascent Expert!

courtesy of International Pharmaceuticals & filipino-store.com
You know when you are old if you wake up in the morning with cramps on your thighs or legs.  You know you are old when you start smelling like Menthol.  And, you know when you are old when you will readily give advice to somebody who complains of muscular pains.

Come to think of it, hey, am like that too.  Hay.

Success That Cares.

Fr. Dave Concepcion giving a Simple Homily at the SM Megamall Chapel

Yesterday, I attended the 12:30pm Mass at the Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord at SM Megamall and the priest was Fr. Dave Concepcion.

His Homily was simple and easy to understand (unlike other sermons that were tedious to listen and hard not to fall asleep from).  He was saying that our mom and pop are happy that we become successful in our own life but THEY ALSO WANT TO FEEL THAT WE CARE FOR THEM.

Is it Bad to be 54 and say "I Wish. . . . "

courtesy of school.discoveryeducation.com
When I am depressed, I find myself saying "I wish. . . ".  Somehow it makes me feel worse but  I cannot help thinking that if only I did things differently but alas, one thing we cannot do is turn the hands of time back.

Logic would dictate that we always look forward and never the past.  We could learn from the past or enjoy a brief smile remembering a happy moment, but that's all there is to it, history.

How Do You Feel When Somebody Guesses Your Age and It's 10 Years Less than the Truth?

Hahahaha. . . I was with my client's Manager and somehow in between talking about Customer Codes and their Computerized Customer Database, "Age" was mentioned in passing.

She said I looked somewhere in my 40s!! I said she needs new eyeglasses as am already 54! Yikes. Double Yikes.

But, she made my day.

Storm Chedeng is Coming!!!!! Not Yet End of the World.

Well, the dailies and Yahoo News have been announcing that Typhoon Chedeng is coming.  It has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility and is expected to hit the Philippines tomorrow.

I cannot understand how they pick the names of storms.  "Chedeng" in Filipino-speak refers to the Mercedes-Benz cars.  Storms are supposed to be named after women not Luxury automobiles. Oh well.

Be ready.

Saturday, May 21, 2011 Has Come and Gone. Judgement Day Did Not Happen.

courtesy of judgementday2011.com
How did you spend your Judgement Day?

As I went to my usual place, the Coffeebreak coffeeshop, I was told that not only was today the End-of-the-World (that was then Saturday, May 21, 2011) but that it will happen by 6pm.  Hmmmmm . . . pretty precise, I said to myself.

courtesy of judgementday2011.com

In today's Dailies, there were reports of people who quit their job and gave away all their worldly belongings.  Imagine that!!! And, there are also the Opportunists who tweeted to all that they are buying stuffs of people giving them away!!

courtesy of wikipedia.  (For Arnold, it was certainly Judgement Day what with News of his divorce on the Web)

In the end, Judgement Day is any day that each of us will have to come to terms eventually in out own time and the question is, Are we prepared to face our Maker??????

Please send me your thoughts by clicking on the Gray Post title of this article.  A COMMENT BOX will then appear below and you can type your comments.  I will read and post it as soon as possible.

With a Growing Aged Population (60years old & above), Should We Not Make Our Stores Senior Citizen-Friendly?

courtesy of Rustan's Shopwise Commonwealth

Since the time Rustan's started in Makati, my mom had always said nothing (no other mall, that is) is better than Rustan's.  Its Quality through and through from the brightly-lit glass cases displaying oh-so-classy perfumes to the dresses that one can only find in Rustan's.  During past better times, my mom would always gift me with Oleg Cassini Long-sleeve Shirts and when I told her those are so expensive (even during those days), her reply was ONLY RUSTAN'S HAD REAL XXL THAT FITS MY SHOULDERS!  Her love affair with dear Oleg did not stop there as there were belts with their shiny buckles and neck ties with tie clips that she said made me look JUST RIGHT.

Her fancy with Rustan's did not stop with the Merchandise Section.  She had absolute praises for the fine assortments in the Rustan's Supermarket (and now, Shopwise) as they had the choicest cuts and the Rustan's Staff tending the Meat Section were so accommodating and helpful in helping her select the choices.  I remembered too when my daughter, who was in charge of making our Christmas Eve dinner, asked me to buy a slice of Gruyere Cheese and I could only do that at Rustan's!

And so, when my mother learned that Rustan's was opening a Shopwise at Commonwealth (just a km from her home in BF Homes Quezon City), she wanted to see it.  Alas, it was not to be so. . . . . She had to content herself with just waiting for my sister to do the shopping for her while she waited at the Jollibee at the Ground floor.  You see, the Layout of Shopwise Commonwealth is not friendly to people of her age (she is 76 years old), to wit:

1.  To get to the Supermarket area, she would have to ride the steep Walkalator to the second floor but she was afraid (as Oldies are wont to feel) when going up high places and the incline might trigger a Vertigo Attack and she would lose her balance;

2.  To get to the Comfort room, the security guard said my mom has to ride another escalator to the Basement of the Supermarket complex (and climb back up again to Ground level afterwards).

Well, her Lover Affair with her dear Rustan's will now have to end hopefully temporarily till Rustan's somehow remembers her loyal but Oldie shoppers when they build their next Shopwise and Rustan's.

I am sure there are many just like my mom who share her sentiments and from a demographic point of view, this Senior Citizen Group is a growing group and they have the money to buy!!!  After all, Rustan's is the Nordstrom of the Philippines, no less and where they both represent the epitome of Customer Service par excellence.

You Know You Are Old When. . .

You know you are old when you are at a swank resto like Circles at the Makati Shangrila Hotel to dine in their sumptuous buffet at P1,700 per person plus plus and instead of giving your complements to the Chef, you say to your seatmate:

1. The Juicy Roast Beef - High cholesterol, uric
2. The Crispy Lechon (Roast Pig) - High cholesterol, fat
courtesy of Circles, Makati Shangrila
3. Big Sugpo (Giant Prawn) - High in saturated fat, uric
4. Nice green Asparagus Sticks - Uric
5. San Rival, Pastries, Tarts, Chocolate Mousse - High in sugar, fats and more fats
6. Bread pudding - Bland & its just bread
7. Dragon fruit - Good for the health but no taste
8. Unsweeteened Green Tea on Ice - Good for the heart but the worst tasting drink
9. Sushi galor - Maguro (Raw Tuna with Mercury), Eel, kani etc (uric)
10. Lamb Chops Grilled with Mint Sauce - uric
11. Baked Oysters - uric

But to all of that, I still ate all of it. As my mom would tell me, "Ngayon Lang Naman" (in English, it is only now you are eating it). Of course only now till the next invite.

Something to Perk You Up That is Not Coffee While in a Coffeeshop

Early this evening about 6pm (or about the time some US Group predicted the World will come to an end), I was at the Coffeebreak coffeeshop at the Waltermart Mall tapping on my Netbook trying to blog while a SunLife Insurance agent was trying to sell me Insurance.

All of a sudden all four men ( 2 Orientals and 2 Filipinos) on the other table stood up.  The shorter Filipino was screaming about how the other 3 were cheating him of  P2,000,000 of his money and he then proceeded to tear into pieces what is believed to be a Bank Check. One of the Orientals banged his fist on the table.  The shorter man, the one who claimed he was cheated, had a clutch bag that we can thought might contain a gun (as most with clutch bags are believed to carry).

The barista then went to the Mall Guard to inform them of the commotion.  Pretty soon we saw a Policeman approach the four and things sort of subsided but the shorter man was still talking in a forceful manner.  He was also joined by the Head of the Mall Security Agency Force.

Slowly, the group was gently moved to the adjoining carpark to continue their discussions away from the mall goers.

After some time, 2 men arrived in a Honda CRV and picked-up the shorter Filipino (who claims to be an attorney) while the Policeman rode in the car of the the other 3 men and all went to the Police Precinct.

Is Smoking Good For a Longer Life?

I am going to post something debatable and controversial but the conversation did take place between two of my Lotto customers last month.  I introduced 36-year old Mohammad (an Iranian but not his real name) to 84-year old John (a Booksale avid patron but also not his real name. hehehehe) one day while I was at my usual Coffeebreak coffee shop in a medium-size mall in Manila.
courtesy of Ultimate Pinoy

Somehow the topic at hand found its way to the ills of smoking.  Mohammed started by saying just last month, a dear uncle of his in Tehran passed away.  The uncle never smoked, never drunk and always dieted and suddenly, he passed away for medical reasons.  Which, he said, was in contrast to his other uncle who leaves in Manila who chain-smokes & drinks a lot and yet, he is till alive.

To all that Mohammed said, John said he started smoking while he was still in Grade 1 (yup, read Grade 1 Elementary) and smoked all the way till Age 75.  His wife also smoked for quite a while. John stopped smoking at 75 because of listening to his wife and his ephysema.  But other than that, John could probably walk faster than me and is thin and lanky and except for obvious wrinkles on his face, he has better health than I do.

I told them if the cigarette companies get hold of the two for advertising purposes, all hell will break lose.

Hello World

My idea for this Blog, Our Blog, is to have an Avenue for me to air to whoever is willing to read (50s, below 50s & above 50s) about the goings-on in my life especially when you realize that at 50, one has to accept certain things.  Bull-headed and hard-headed as I am, I refuse to accept that I can no longer do some of the things that I used to do or wished I had done when I was younger (drat the word!).

But maybe, I do not really have to accept everything as being "Life's like that".  Maybe am hoping that if we all put our heads together, we could share and come up something that the other never thought of (and Eureka! A solution!).

In coming up with a URL (web address) for my (Our) Blog, I did not realize there were so many websites already with "Life After 50" label.  I mean, I can understand "Life Begins at 40" to be long taken, but "Life After 50"????? Should I now target "Life Pass 80" as the next Blog-to-be?

Kidding aside, I want this Blog to be as much my blog as it is Your Blog and I expect that you Guy/gal Reader out there would GIVE ME YOUR TWO-CENTS WORTH (or should I say, TWO CENTAVOS WORTH) of opinion, talk, rage, laughter, idea, spur-of-the-moment thought by just CLICKING the Post Title of the article you are reading and then start  writing whatever you want in the COMMENT BOX  that will appear below.

P.S.  Don't worry if what you want to say/write/type is miles from the Post topic where you click.  Let me be the neophyte green Editor-in-chief to create a Post about what you commented if in case your topic/subject is Light-years from the Posted article.

Thank you so much.  Hope hope to hear from you  too.
