Is Smoking Good For a Longer Life?

I am going to post something debatable and controversial but the conversation did take place between two of my Lotto customers last month.  I introduced 36-year old Mohammad (an Iranian but not his real name) to 84-year old John (a Booksale avid patron but also not his real name. hehehehe) one day while I was at my usual Coffeebreak coffee shop in a medium-size mall in Manila.

Somehow the topic at hand found its way to the ills of smoking.  Mohammed started by saying just last month, a dear uncle of his in Tehran passed away.  The uncle never smoked, never drunk and always dieted and suddenly, he passed away for medical reasons.  Which, he said, was in contrast to his other uncle who leaves in Manila who chain-smokes & drinks a lot and yet, he is till alive.

To all that Mohammed said, John said he started smoking while he was still in Grade 1 (yup, read Grade 1 Elementary) and smoked all the way till Age 75.  His wife also smoked for quite a while. John stopped smoking at 75 because of listening to his wife and his ephysema.  But other than that, John could probably walk faster than me and is thin and lanky and except for obvious wrinkles on his face, he has better health than I do.

I told them if the cigarette companies get hold of the two for advertising purposes, all hell will break lose.
